12 MOST FAVORITE CARTOONS OF CHILDHOOD

Childhood is the most treasured part of our life and certain moments like the cartoons that we used to watch will be etched in our hearts forever. That golden era had a plethora of unforgettable cartoons which can most certainly give today's cartoons a run for its money.

Here’s one for those days gone by; a few of my favourite cartoon shows. The list could be endless, hence choosing the ones that are really special and would take you on the roller coaster ride of laughter and nostalgia which is much needed in these tough and trying times.

THE JUNGLE BOOK:

This show was among the first cartoon shows which any of the '90s kids would associate with. Adapted from the book by Rudyard Kipling this classic was a household favourite. The Hindi version of ‘The jungle book’ used to be aired on channel Doordarshan every Sunday morning, and I remember how impatiently I used to wait for the jingle: “Jungle, jungle baat chali hai….”. And it continues to echo my heart even today.

TOM AND JERRY:

This evergreen show needs no introduction at all. During the summer holidays, one parent from the building would rent the VCR of this show and it would create a huge excitement amongst all the children and the lazy afternoons would be spent watching  Tom and Jerry

The never-ending chase and gimmicks of Tom the cat and Jerry mouse are truly hilarious. And I used to love the part when these two enemies turned friends and also those episodes which showed two adorable dogs, Spike and Tyke.

DUCK TALES:

Woohoo!!! Who doesn’t remember the iconic theme song and Uncle Scrooge’s adventures with his three nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie along with Launchpad, my favourite character in the show.

As a kid, I actually wished to experience a dive in a room filled up to the brim with gold coins and even go on a crazy adventure in all the fascinating places shown.

TALESPIN:

Talespin is said to have been inspired by the characters of The Jungle Book. This show also aired on Sunday morning on Doordarshan

The sky was no less than a playground for Balloo the pilot. He along with his sidekick Kit, Ritu (Rebecca) and Wildcat never failed to brighten my Sunday mornings with their mind-boggling acrobatics in the air.

If there ever was a time when I wanted to be a pilot and do all the crazy stuff with my very own biplane it was definitely because of this show.

HE-MAN:

This superhero of the ’90s was a macho man in the true sense. He used to fight the evil Skeletor to protect his planet and his Castle.

I was in awe of his green pet tiger and his awesome sword and I don’t think there would be any He-man fan who wouldn’t have lifted a bat and imitated the “I have the power” cry of He-man and also his classic fighting techniques.

FLINTSTONES:

Flintstones can be said to be a very creative show on a lovely family and their friends cum neighbour of the Stone age era. This show used to be aired on the channel, The Cartoon Network

From having a dinosaur as a house pet to driving the log and stone car there was hardly anything about this show that would not leave me fascinated and rolling in laughter. And of course, how can this go without the mention of Fred’sYabba Dabba Do’!

SCOOBY DOO:

A show about an adorable, cowardly, talking, brown coloured dog, Scooby and his caretaker/ friend Shaggy who was as coward as Scooby. They along with their gang used to solve mysteries in the wackiest way.

Shaggy and Scooby's enthralling eating skills can never go amiss! Sometimes the show would even have Scooby’s brave,  lovable and hyperactive nephew, Scrappy, who would always be on the front foot to encounter ghosts and mysteries.

DEXTER’S LABORATORY:

This show depicts the story of every household, a poor little innocent brother being bullied by his elder sister. Except that in this show the brother, Dexter, was a genius who had a magnificent underground secret lab and his fun-loving, garrulous sister, Dee Dee was the only one to know about it.

Their hilarious antics and Dexter's crazy experiments in his lab made this show every kid’s favourite back in the ’90s.

COURAGE THE COWARDLY DOG:

As opposed to his name, Courage was a perpetually panic-stricken dog who always seemed to live on the edge.

Courage along with his master and his wife lived in a secluded house that somehow always experienced some paranormal activities. Watching this little family deal with these unexpected guests was a humourous adventure in itself.

SWAT KATS:

With their supercars, advanced weapons, slick bikes, these two pilot cats, Razor and T-Bone, were the epitome of badass personas. In a city called Megakat City, whose residents were all felines, no crime could escape the Swat Kats.

I used to be enthralled by all the action especially their barehanded fights. It was like they said, “There’s nothing to fear when Swat Kats are here to save the day”.

ADAM’S FAMILY:

While mentioning the cartoons depicting supernatural elements how can Adam’s family be far behind?

The creepy but delightful ghost family in their eerie house never failed to leave me in bouts of laughter with their tomfoolery. According to me, The ‘Hand’ and Uncle Fester were the most entertaining characters of the show.

LOONEY TUNES:

When writing about the favourite cartoon shows of yesteryears how is it possible that this legendary show would remain left out.

The entire troop of looney tunes was looney in the true sense! Be the sassiness of Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny or the never-ending attempts of Wile. E Coyote to catch the swift Roadrunner, the scheming of Sylvester and the adorable Tweety bird, Crazy Tazz, the smelly Pepe Le Pew and many others who will never fail to cheer you up on a gloomy day. The Looney tunes show is indeed epic in its own right.

‘That’s all folks!
